Reporting Structure:
Manager, Chassis Engineering & Vehicle Dynamics
Coordinating Functions:
Interface with staff in:
- Purchasing
- Engineering, including TBD direct reports
- Quality
- Manufacturing
- Finance
- Component and Engineering Service Suppliers
Key Deliverables:
- Create and maintain technical specifications for steering components including hydraulic gear, variable-assist electric pump, hoses, electronic control unit (ECU), electric power-assist rack-and-pinion gear, steering column.
- Support sourcing for components to meet cost, timing and quality targets.
- Lead regular reviews with suppliers to achieve program objectives including component and system DVP&R.
- Deliver quality improvements through component design, process control, problem-solving techniques, supplier engagement, and/or assembly instruction.
- Achieve PPAP of responsible components and coordinate required validation testing materials and resources.
- Complete chassis development as required for current program - steering, suspension, brakes.
- Author development test reports and email first-sight findings to key stakeholders on a timely basis.
- Build internal capability within team through training, consulting, and authoring specifications and procedures.
- Establish core development team, with cross functional support from other engineering depts. as required.
- Identify and deliver best-in-class driving dynamics attributes, through subjective and objective data.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Engineer systems and components for current program and all-new steering system for future programs.
- Prepare documents and presentations as required to support communication, validation and certification.
- Lead all Design Release Engineer (DRE) tasks for relevant components including release process, component drawings and other supporting documentation, through verification, validation & certification.
- Manage suppliers proactively, with focused program management mind-set. Lead project from start to finish.
- Meet all cost, timing, performance attributes, and packaging targets.
- Serve as primary contact to all steering system component suppliers.
- Guide and mentor others as required to grow internal technical capabilities.
- Support prototype and production assembly events at domestic or international locations.
- Approve/inspect mechanical shop work to ensure safe vehicle operation; perform other work as required.
- Represent department as recognized subject-matter expert. Support frequent drive events, evaluation training, vehicle-level validation; work closely with Vehicle Integration dept. as required.
- Lead chassis development / testing strategy and timing plan to ensure compatibility with overall program; monitor resources as required to minimize risks; support alternate plans as required.
- Perform instrumented vehicle dynamics testing and data reduction.
- Support vehicle-level certification requirements for FMVSS and ECE. Support with data & testing as required.
Requirements: - Approx 15%25%20Travel required to domestic & international locations.
- Fluent in English / BS Mechanical Engineering / Strong automotive interest and aptitude
- At least 15 years combined experience in BOTH chassis development AND component design and release.
- Experience tuning chassis components such as steering, shocks, bushings, stabilizer bars, or tires.
- Experience with vehicle dynamics instrumentation, set-up and analysis.
- Ability to effectively communicate complex issues to senior management in formal and informal settings.
- Strong interpersonal skills with teamwork mindset; able to handle stressful situations with composure
